What Stopping You From Business Success?

What are your New Year’s resolutions?
Are you dreaming about starting a business or expanding on a business you already own? Perhaps you’ve been fantasizing about selling that jewellery you’ve been making in your basement for years or turning your knack for finding a place for every teapot and golf ball into a home organizing business. Or maybe you’d like to take that online Etsy shop offline and open a neighbourhood store?
I get it.
It’s easier to dream than do. And it’s even easier to dream than tackle the millions of excuses currently floating around in your head. Yes, those excuses can grow to be 10 feet tall with fangs and claws if you let them!
Those excuses will get you no where.
The only thing they’ll get you is a pang of jealousy when you hear of so-and-so actually going and doing what you wanted to do all along.
Here are 5 common excuses stopping you from starting a business or expanding on your business and how to conquer them:
1. "I don’t know where to begin"
Starting a business and working your way to the success you deserve can be daunting. But remember, every successful business started somewhere. Research a name, buy a domain, start a WordPress site, start mapping out price points, start a business plan. Do something, anything that moves you closer to your end goal.
2. "I have no support"
I know it can be difficult when those closest to you don’t help or encourage your business. But remember, this is your business and your dream so be sure to support yourself. Surround yourself with people who DO support you by joining forums, attending networking events and getting together with friends who show a genuine interest. And honestly, remove yourself from those who seem to have a negative outlook on your business and especially from those who outwardly tell you your ideas will fail. You’ll only harm your chances of success by keeping toxic people in your life.
3. "There’s too much competition"
I know it can be intimidating to enter a market with loads of competition but think of it like this: a lot of competition means a hungry market. And a hungry market means a lot of potential customers!
4. "I have no money"
Money is important BUT that doesn’t mean if you don’t have it you won’t succeed. Start at home, start small and go from there. Even if it takes you a bit longer than you’d like, that’s OK because the end result, thanks to your patience and hard work, will pay off in a big way.
5. "I’ve already failed in the past."
So what? Failure is actually a GOOD thing. Do you know how many successful people failed first? Many. And you can read all about them here. Fear of failure is often the number one excuse why so many people continue to sit in the cold cubicle and dream of the "what if’s". I know it’s scary but you’ll never know unless you go out there and do it.
Wishing you a prosperous and fulfilling year ahead!
